1) The Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board is represented at every monthly meeting by an assistant state attorney general. Veterinarians appearing before the Board to answer complaints can hire their own attorney, but most do not and those vets are all automatically represented by a specialist attorney who is present at every board meeting. Pet owners have no representation. This uneven playing field must change, and pet owners must have automatic representation at every meeting.
2) The board consists of an uneven number of veterinary professionals and public members. Currently, there are only 2 out of 9 bonafide public members hearing complaints against Arizona veterinarians. The public member representation on the board must be equalized.
3) New board members are currently interviewed by the very same board members they seek to replace. That board then recommends them to the Governor for inclusion. This unfair practice needs to change. Board members need to be interviewed and recommended by a neutral third party.
4) Board members should not have obvious conflicts of interest. Currently at least one board member is in business selling supplies to veterinarians. Every veterinarian they judge is a potential client.
